About GottaKnow

There’s a gap between what school teaches and what life actually requires.

You can spend twelve years in a classroom and leave without knowing how to read a lease, what happens if you ignore a medical bill, how compound interest works for or against you, what your rights are if a cop stops you, or how to recognize when your mental health needs attention. These aren’t niche topics. They’re the stuff that shapes how your life goes — and most of us figure them out the hard way, if at all.

GottaKnow.tips exists to close that gap.

We’re a growing database of verified, sourced life facts covering everything from health and money to legal rights, relationships, safety, psychology, and beyond. Every entry is written in plain language for real people — especially young Americans navigating life for the first time — with no jargon, no agenda, and no fluff. Just honest, accurate, actionable information backed by real sources.

Who we are

GottaKnow.tips is an independent site run by a small team that genuinely believes access to good information changes lives. We’re not a media company. We’re not funded by advertisers who shape our content. We’re not trying to go viral with clickbait. We’re trying to build the most useful, most trustworthy repository of practical life knowledge on the internet — one verified fact at a time.

Meet the Founder

David Campbell, founder of GottaKnow.tipsDavid Campbell is a Mining, Geological & Environmental Consultant who has also been designing and building websites since 1995. He’s also the founder of the MarineBio Conservation Society, a nonprofit he started in 1998 that has grown into one of the largest marine biology and conservation resources on the internet.

GottaKnow.tips is part of how David gives back — this time not to the ocean, but to his own species. The same itch that drove him to build a free resource for marine science education drove him to build this one: too much important knowledge locked away from the people who need it most.

The site is also an ongoing experiment in responsible AI. Content is researched, double-checked, rated and then drafted by Neo, our very strict custom AI agent David built to handle sourcing, verification, and draft writing — with every tip reviewed, updated and then approved by a human before it goes live. Neo doesn’t publish. David does.

Any proceeds from the site go toward expanding GottaKnow.tips and supporting the conservation work at the MarineBio Conservation Society. So when you share a tip that helps someone, you’re indirectly helping the ocean too.

How our content is created

Every entry on GottaKnow.tips goes through a rigorous multi-step process before it ever appears on the site.

Step 1 — Research. Each topic begins with a search for authoritative, primary sources — government agencies like the CDC, NIH, FTC, and CFPB; medical institutions like Mayo Clinic and Harvard Health; legal resources like Nolo and Cornell Law; peer-reviewed academic research; and established financial institutions. We don’t write from memory or general knowledge. We start with sources.

Step 2 — Source verification. Before a single word of content is written, every source URL is checked to confirm it’s live, accessible, and from a legitimate organization. Sources that return errors, redirect to unrelated pages, or come from unreliable domains are discarded. Only verified, authoritative sources make it through.

Step 3 — Writing. Content is drafted based strictly on what the verified sources actually say. Our writer is instructed to use qualifiers like “typically,” “in most cases,” and “generally” rather than stating absolutes unless the source explicitly does. Specific statistics, thresholds, and dates are only included when directly supported by the source material. The goal is accuracy first — always.

Step 4 — Self-review and fact-checking. Every draft is put through a rigorous editorial review pass that checks: Does every claim match the provided sources? Are any statistics overstated or taken out of context? Is the professional help guidance appropriate? Is anything potentially harmful or misleading to a young reader? Entries that score below our quality threshold are rejected outright — they never reach the site.

Step 5 — Human review and approval. Every entry that passes the internal quality review is then reviewed and approved by a human editor before publishing. We read the content, spot-check source links, verify that claims are accurate and appropriately caveated, and assess whether the entry genuinely serves our readers. If something doesn’t feel right — even if it passed the automated review — it doesn’t get published. There are no exceptions to this step.
Only entries that pass every step of this process make it onto GottaKnow.tips.

The “when to get help” callout

You’ll notice that many entries include a highlighted section at the bottom titled “When to get help.” This is one of our most important features. Information is powerful, but it has limits. A fact about tenant rights doesn’t replace a tenant rights attorney. A fact about depression doesn’t replace a therapist. A fact about chest pain doesn’t replace a doctor.

We take our responsibility to our readers seriously — especially our younger readers. When a topic touches medical, legal, financial, or mental health decisions, we tell you clearly when a professional is the right next step and why. We write these callouts the way we’d talk to a younger sibling: directly, without alarm, and with genuine care.

Our commitment to you

We will never publish information we haven’t verified. We will never let advertising relationships shape what we write or how we write it. We will always tell you when a topic is complex enough that you need professional guidance, not just a fact. And we will always write for the person who needs this information most — not the person who already knows it.

If you found something useful here, share it. That’s how this site grows and how more people get access to information that can genuinely change how they navigate their lives.

Have a suggestion for a topic we should cover? We’d love to hear it.
