Here’s something almost nobody teaches you: every member of Congress — your House representative and your two senators — has a casework office specifically for helping people deal with federal agencies. It’s free. It’s for everyone in their district or state. And it can actually move things.
When their office contacts a federal agency on your behalf, it’s called a ‘congressional inquiry.’ It’s not just a polite nudge — agencies treat these seriously because members of Congress have real oversight power. According to Senator Tammy Baldwin’s office, a congressional inquiry can alert an agency to a potential processing error on things like immigration applications, case delays, expiring documents, and more. Rep. Casar’s office puts it plainly: if you can’t get an answer in a timely way, or if you’ve been treated unfairly, their office may be able to help you get a fair and timely response.
The IRS specifically has formal procedures for handling congressional inquiries. Your member of Congress can act as a designee to help resolve a federal tax matter on your behalf. If you want the IRS to share information directly with a congressional staff member over the phone, that request must be in writing and include your authorization — but there are also options for handling inquiries with oral authorization depending on the situation. If things are unclear, the IRS may offer to contact you directly to resolve the problem instead.
To use this, look up who represents you on congress.gov, go to their official website, and find the section usually labeled ‘Help with a Federal Agency’ or ‘Casework.’ You’ll typically fill out a form and explain your situation. Be honest and specific — what agency, what’s the issue, how long has it been going on. Both Rep. Casar’s and Sen. Baldwin’s sites have this kind of form available.
One honest note: congressional offices will tell you upfront they can’t guarantee a favorable outcome. What they can often do is get you a real response when you were being ignored, and flag errors that might have slipped through the cracks. That alone can be a game-changer.
