Nobody Automatically Sends You a Death Certificate — You Have to Go Get It

Here’s something most people don’t realize until they’re already in the middle of it: a death certificate isn’t automatically mailed to the family. After someone dies, the funeral home typically starts preparing the certificate and you can usually get certified copies within a few days to a couple of weeks. But getting them is on you — or whoever is handling the estate.

And you’re going to need more than one. For a typical estate, many families end up needing around ten copies or more — but the exact number depends on how complex the estate is. Every bank account, every insurance policy, every piece of property in another county — they each want their own certified copy. Real estate may require one copy per county where property is owned, vehicles may need one through the Secretary of State, and each financial institution holding an IRA or CD may want its own. Health insurance from an employer might need one too. It adds up fast, so it’s better to order more than you think you’ll need upfront.

To get the copies, you contact the vital records office of the state where the death occurred. You can usually order online, by mail, or in person. You’ll need to know the date and place of death. Note that most states limit who can request a certified copy — typically immediate family members, the estate executor, or someone with a legal interest in the estate.

Once you have them, you’ll use certified copies alongside the person’s Social Security number to cancel benefits, close or transfer accounts, and notify all the agencies and programs involved. It’s a lot of steps, but having enough copies from the start means you’re not stuck reordering them mid-process.

When to get help: If you’re the one handling someone’s estate and you’re not sure where to start, an estate attorney or even a funeral director can walk you through exactly what you need and how many copies to order. Don’t be afraid to ask — this is what they do.
