Sleeping It Off Can Kill

Here’s something a lot of people get dangerously wrong: they see someone passed out after drinking and think, okay, they just need to sleep it off. But that assumption has killed people.

The scary part is what’s happening inside the body even after the drinking stops. Alcohol sitting in the stomach and intestines keeps entering the bloodstream — so a person’s blood alcohol level can actually still be rising after they’ve passed out. They’re not in the clear just because they stopped drinking.

And when alcohol levels get high enough, it can shut down the brain signals that control automatic responses — including the gag reflex. That means if someone vomits while unconscious, they can choke on it and suffocate. They can’t protect themselves. That’s why leaving them alone is so dangerous.

Breathing can also slow down or stop entirely. And none of this looks dramatic from the outside — it can just look like someone sleeping deeply.

So how do you tell the difference between really drunk and actually in danger? A drunk person is usually still somewhat responsive — maybe talkative or active, even if unsteady. Someone with alcohol poisoning generally feels sick, confused, and weak, and they’re harder or impossible to wake up. If you’re not sure, that’s your answer: call 911. Don’t try to figure out exactly how bad it is on your own.

If you’re waiting for help to arrive, don’t leave them alone. If they’re conscious, try to keep them awake and sitting up. If they’re unconscious and you have to lay them down, roll them onto their side — this is called the recovery position — so that if they vomit, it doesn’t block their airway.

Nobody wants to be the person who “overreacted.” But you’d way rather explain a false alarm to a paramedic than regret not calling.

When to get help: If someone near you is showing signs of alcohol poisoning — unconscious, hard to wake up, breathing weird, vomiting while out — call 911 immediately. This isn’t a situation for googling. Get a real person there fast.
