Stay in the Car

Here’s something almost nobody tells you before you start driving: if you break down on a highway, the safest place you can be is inside your car with your seatbelt on.

Not standing on the shoulder waving for help. Not pacing behind your bumper. Inside. Buckled.

Passing cars and trucks are moving fast — sometimes 70, 80 miles per hour. Drivers aren’t expecting someone on foot on the side of the road. Reaction times are short. Lanes are narrow. And a person standing outside a disabled vehicle is incredibly vulnerable to being struck by traffic that never even saw them coming.

Your car, on the other hand, is a big hunk of metal. It’s visible. It has some mass to it. And if you’re buckled inside it, you’ve got a lot more protection than you do standing in the open air.

Seatbelts matter here too — not just in crashes, but in this exact scenario. According to OSHA, more than half of people who die in vehicle crashes annually were not wearing a seatbelt at the time. And research published in PubMed Central shows that seatbelts reduce the probability of being killed by 40–50% for drivers and front-seat passengers. So if something does hit your car while you’re broken down, being buckled in makes a real difference.

So what should you actually do?

Pull as far off the road as you can — ideally past the white line and onto the shoulder or beyond. Turn on your hazard lights immediately. Then stay buckled in the driver’s seat or get down low in the back seat, away from the traffic side. Call for help from inside the car. If you have road flares or reflective triangles, only deploy them if you can do it quickly and get right back in.

The only time it makes sense to get out is if there’s a fire or smoke — then yes, get away from the vehicle and move as far from the road as possible. But barring that kind of emergency, the car is your friend.

It goes against every instinct to sit still when something goes wrong. But on a fast highway, staying put and staying buckled is genuinely the smarter call.
